The oldest documented library was a group of clay tablets, inscribed in the cuneiform script, found in Sumer in 2600 BC. Eventually, private libraries of written books emerged in classical Greece. Later, the great libraries of the Mediterranean region emerged in Alexandria and Constantinople.
As libraries have become more accessible and popular, many groups have found ways to use them. Library employees stress the role of the library as a community meeting place and a space for people to get together. One study found that 21 percent of library patrons use the library for meetings, including groups. Interestingly, women were more likely than men to use the library for meetings.
As the population becomes increasingly tech-savvy, libraries are changing to meet the needs of a digital age. In addition to serving as onramps to the internet, they have become a technological hub, where customers can learn about and use new digital resources.
